Inland Rail Narrabri to Northstar

When: 2019

As part of a joint venture project with Trans4m Rail, this project involved John Holland, SEE Civil, and Rhomberg Rail. The project involved an upgrade to 186 km of the Inland Rail, including bridges, crossings, sidings, and roads.

Plan A’s role was to provide strategic direction on tender program delivery. Plan A produced the time chainage program within days of the tender starting, which allowed the team to use the planned tender time for fine-tuning the project and building confidence in their delivery. Tilos was the primary tool used to provide instant visibility for the entire project, with dynamic histograms, culvert procurement schedules, resource limits, and sensitive receiver clashes.

Gamuda/BMD - M6

During the planning of the M6 - Stage 1, which involved the construction of two 4km tunnels, Gamuda engaged Plan A on board to convert their current P6 program data into Tilos. The project was part of the NSW government plan to eliminate surface traffic by connecting the M8 Motorway to President Avenue.

Our role was to deliver the data as surface works and tunnels works, including summarised staging, resource histogram, bulk tunnel excavation quantities, and tunnel services clash detection. Additionally, Tilos outputs were produced using feedback from the team, which led to a more confident tender program for submission.

RMS - Coffs Harbour

When: 2019 - 2020

This government project was contracted to RMS, for the creation of a 14km bypass of the Coffs Harbour urban area. They hired Plan A for the creation of the Initial Program in order to assess the project’s duration.

Plan A was able to provide RMS with its first detailed program, which brought confidence in the total planned duration, staging, and strategy for the project. This information strengthened RMS’s confidence in reporting back to the federal government for approval and providing milestone dates to contractors. The Tilos output revealed mass haul as well as constraints for the project, like property acquisitions, services, and environmental factors impacting mass haul.

CPB - Gold Coast Light Rail

CPB Contractors was involved in the Light Rail Project, which was the creation of a 6.7km extension of the light rail system that ran from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heights. It also included the creation of 8 new stations.

Plan A’s role in the project was to convert the original P6 Program into a Tilos output. The objective was to reduce overhead costs by reviewing the program and providing feedback on strategies to bring the completion date up.

ACCIONA - Richmond River Bridge

When: 2018 - 2019

Plan A's role was to continue supplying support to the bridge program. P6 was the primary tool with outputs to Tilos. The Tilos output showed everything from cashflow to line of balance graphs for girder storage. The Tilos outputs were printed monthly, laminated and a marker pen provided for the team to talk strategy and better the program. Tilos was critical in balancing barge movements and limiting impacts to the end date.

Robson Civil Projects - Mangoola Mine

Robson Civil Projects hired Plan A for two projects: the new tailings dam at Mt. Arthur and the Mangoola Mine expansion.

Robson engaged Plan A for the Mangoola Mine expansion, which required a series of construction projects designed to provide access from the current mine to the new mining lease. This includes sediment dams, clean water diversions, roads and bridges, etc. The Tilos software was used to show relationships between the mining components, including mass haul.

Fulton Hogan - Nowra Bridge

ACCIONA was contracted for a project that involved the construction of 8km of the carriageway, headed northbound, the final component of the W2B section of the Pacific Highway.

Plan A’s role in this project was to deliver the program from start to finish. Assisted by their use of Tilos, the project was delivered under budget and ahead of schedule. A comparison of the tender Tilos output with the project completed output revealed that the tender strategy was accurate from start to finish.

Fulton Hogan - Kariong to Somersby

CPB - Devils Pulpit to Richmond River

Plan A's role was to convert the P6 program into a Tilos output, the intent was to better understand the program both past and present to accurately forecast a completion date. The Tilos outlined better strategies to maximise paving runs as well as identifying mitigation strategies to build confidence in Handover dates.

Additionally, using multiple windows in Tilos allowed a clear and concise history of events leading to EOT claims. This strategy of using Tilos for EOT claims had not been done before for this client and was recognised as a better way to display time delays by the claims team.

Seymour Whyte - Cooroy to Curra

When: 2020

Seymour Whtye was contracted for the $1-billion project involving the creation of 26km of highway from Woodnum to Curra. The four-lane, divided highway is projected to decrease traffic congestion and increase public safety.

Plan A’s role in the project was to create individual programs for the 26 bridges involved in the project. With Tilos, they produced a single-page report that revealed data for design, resource allocation, structural quantities, and concrete quantities.

Fulton Hogan - Albion Park Rail

Value: $600+ M

When: 2019

This government project, contracted by Fulton Hogan, involved the upgrade of the Albion Park Rail Bypass, as part of the Pacific Highway extension of the M1 Princes motorway. The project aimed to provide a missing link between Sydney and Bombaderry.

Plan A’s role was to convert the P6 program into a Tilos output to facilitate communication between the bridge teams and civil teams to improve future handovers. One output focused on summarising bridge durations and the other focused on more detailed views of a bridge, revealing resources, structural component quantities, concrete supply quantities, and access dates for each bridge.

CPB - Section C

CPB Contractors was contracted for an upgrade of 34km of Pacific Highway, linking Maclean to Devil’s Pulpit section with the Richmond River to Ballina Bypass section. For the project, they needed a Tilos conversion and claim assistance.

Plan A was brought in to convert the P6 Program into a Tilos output, to understand the entire project from start to finish and to accurately forecast a completion date. The Tilos output outlined strategies to maximise paving runs and to identify mitigation strategies. Additionally, Tilos was used to present a clear and concise history of events leading to EOT claims, which was the first use of Tilos for this purpose, and a highly effective use at that.

CPB - Mackay

CPB Contractors was hired for the Mackay Northern Access Upgrade Project involving the expansion of the Bruce Highway from four lanes to six lanes.

Plan A’s role in the project was to convert the P6 Program into a Tilos output, so CPB could review the program and identify strategies for bringing up the completion date for the projection, resulting in reduced overhead costs. The Tilos revealed multiple tight critical paths as well as heat mapping, which ultimately revealed that different measures were needed than ones to save time.

Georgiou - Mona Vale Road

Georgiou engaged Plan A on in the planning stages of the Mona Vale Road Project, which involved upgrading over 3 kilometres of the current road from a 2-lane to a 4-lane road.

Plan A converted the original P6 Program into a Tilos output that the management team could use. The key product was a single-page output that focused on resource allocation, the orderly arrangement of services, and potential strategies to accelerate the program. The single-page visualisation highlighted these aspects and allowed Georgiou to interpret the results.

Robson Tailings - Mt. Arthur Dam

Robson Civil Projects hired Plan A for two projects: the new tailings dam at Mt. Arthur and the Mangoola Mine expansion.

The Mt. Arthur project included the construction of a new tailings dam, needed for mine expansion at the BHP mine. Plan A’s role was to convert the original MS Project program into Tilos to assess the project. The key outcome was to evaluate whether Robson could complete the project by the deadline with the current plant, or if they would need to hire or buy more to make the deadline. The data graphs were completed and provided the management team with the necessary findings.

Lendlease - Port Augusta Bridge

Lendlease was hired for the Joy Baluch AM Bridge Duplication, a government project involving the creation of a motorist and pedestrian bridge in Port Augusta. The construction aims to improve road safety, improve road efficacy, improve freight productivity, and address safety concerns for pedestrians.

Plan A’s role was to create a Tilos output from the P6 tender program. The results were essential to this project and showed a unique way of revealing the logic from design packages driving procurement. Plan A coupled the Tilos report with a 4D movie produced from the P6 program (using ASTA). This resulted in a clear construction methodology and reaffirmed to the client that the contractor has a clear understanding of constructability.

Georgiou - Isle of Capri

In 2020, Georgiou engaged Plan A to transform the original MS Project program into Tilos output to aid in the planning and construction of the Isle of Capri Bridge Project. This includes the construction of a new, four-lane bridge, road upgrades and other improvements.

By bringing in Plan A, we were able to review and verify the logic behind the original program, detect irregularities and areas of concern. This allowed Georgiou a tool to recognise patterns of construction, as well as visualise consistency in production and sequencing.
